Others Can Hear Themselves

If your friends can hear themselves, or you get echo and looping in voice chat, your Windows audio devices are probably set to the wrong thing. Here's how to fix it.

Signs You Have This Issue

This guide covers a whole family of audio problems that all come from the same cause. You are likely in the right place if:

  • Your friends can hear themselves talking back to them (an echo)
  • Your audio loops, echoes, or repeats
  • You cannot hear your friends in Discord or another voice app

What Causes This

This happens because CABLE Input has been set as your Windows output (playback) device. CABLE Input should never be your output device.

SmoredBoard already sends your soundboard audio into CABLE Input, and CABLE Input feeds straight into CABLE Output, which is what your voice app listens to. If Windows also plays everything else (including your friends' voices) into CABLE Input, all of that audio gets looped straight back to your voice app. That is why your friends hear themselves, and why you hear nothing on your real speakers.

Setting CABLE Output as your default microphone in Windows is fine and does not cause this. The problem is only CABLE Input being used as an output device.

How to Fix It

The fix is to set your Windows output device back to your real hardware:

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the bottom-right of your taskbar and select Sound settings
  2. Under Output, choose your headphones or speakers. CABLE Input should never be your output device

Your CABLE devices belong in these spots:

  • Inside SmoredBoard, your Virtual Mic should be set to CABLE Input
  • Inside Discord (or your voice app), your input device should be set to CABLE Output

Setting CABLE Output as your default microphone in Windows is also fine, it will not cause this issue.

Still Having Issues?

If your audio still is not working after fixing your Windows settings, work through the full Audio Not Working guide for more troubleshooting steps.

If you are only hearing looping, the Audio Looping guide covers a related setting inside SmoredBoard itself.
